The Danube in Budapest

The reach of the Danube in the capital covers around 1500 hectares. The Danube can fish very well, but it helps to get local knowledge.  All sorts of white fish living in rivers such as barbel are caught frequentlt in the river, but pikeperch, pike and aspe also turn up as well.

Licences can be obtained in several anglers' shops and in the office of Budapest Angling Association, where aditional information is also available.

It is important to know that this licence is not valid for the industrial and trade harbours of the Danube in the capital.

Szilas reservoir

16 hectares. It is situated in the 16th district of Budapest in Matyasfold.  It can be reached from the direction of either the Kerepesi or Jaszberenyi road.

Stock of fish: carp, grass carp, all sorts of white fish, crucians,  pike, Wels catfish, pikeperch, aspe.

Licences can be bought from the fisheries official on the spot. There is a Snack bar and there are boats to rent.

Reservoir of Hatarret

8 hectares. Accessible from Budapest through Pilisvorosvar, turning off the main road number 10 towards Pilisszant6, the lake is before the village in the direction of the holiday resort.

Stock of fish: carp, pike, pikeperch, bream.

Single-day tickets on the bank. In the Association building on the shore there is a guestroom which can be booked in the office of MOHOSZ. Phone: (+36) 1 319-9790.

Reservoir of Haziret

25 hectares. Accessible from Budapest by turning right off main road number 10 to an unpaved road before Pilisvorosvar

Stock of fish: carp, pike, pikeperch, bream.

Reservoir of Gomba

18.8 hectares.

Stock of fish: carp,  pike, pikeperch, grass carp, aspe, crucians.

Branch of the Danube at Rackeve

2000 hectares. It is a branch of the Danube bordered and operated by Kvassay lockgate in Budapest and the lockgate Tass. The depth of the upper reach is 2-3 meters, but it is 4-5 at places in the lower reach. Together with the main branch of the Danube it surrounds the Csepel Island. Its uppermost part is in the capital, in the 9th, 20th and 21st districts, its further reaches are accessible on roads of the Csepel Island (Szigetszentmiklos, Rackeve, Makad) and on the main road number 51 not on the island (after Dunaharaszti, Kiskunlachaza, Domsod) You should turn towards the lock-gate of Tass.

In several places it is lined by reed. There are also areas with reedgrass. It is a holiday resort, although only its lower reach (from Rackeve) is recommended for swimming. The water is still, when water is let through it flows towards Tass.

The association utilising it for fishing introduces young carp each year from the fish hatcheries it maintains on the southern edge of Csepel Island. Also fries of pikeperch are produced by the association itself.

Licences can be bought in major anglers' shops in Budapest, and in~Rackeve, in the Office of the Rackeve Danube-branch Angling Association: Rackeve, Kossuth u. 94.

Accommodation is available in the anglers lodge in Tass-rozsasziget (also with meals, telephone: (+36) 76/357-756), in hotels in Rackeve, or occasionally at the anglers lodge of the association beside the Danube-branch and at private houses in the villages.

Boat renting is available at the anglers lodges.

Those wishing to visit the anglers' lodge in Rozsasziget can reach it through Rackeve and Makad on the road on top of the floodcontrol dam of the Danube-branch.

Bay of Tass

This 9-hectare water is the part of the Rackeve Branch of the Danube that is below the Iockgate.

Water running through the lock reaches the main branch of the Danube after flowing hardly a kilometre. There is no dam wall at the mouth, therefore, on the area considered as the bay the water level is always the same as in the main branch of the Danube, ie. conforms to its level.

The part of the water area marked "V" is split into two halves by the so-called division island. Here one branch is characterised by the intense rolling of the water falling through the lock, providing a hunting place mainly preferred by pikeperch and aspe. In the other branch the water is still, so above all pike awaits us at the heaps of stones supporting the riverbank.
