The Danube

The river enters Hungary at Rajka and leaves the country below Mohacs. There is no dam on its course in Hungary. Its largest islands are Szentendrei-island, which ends above Budapest and Csepel island, situated at the southern edge of Budapest.

Different stretches of the Danube are dominated by different kinds of fish, the stock heavily depending on the form of the river bed and the banks, the height of water at that time of year etc. The Danube contains a large variety of different species of fish. Sorts of white fish (ide, nose-carp and different sorts of bream), barbel, predatory fishes (pikeperch, pike, Wels catfish), carp and sterlet can also be caught in certain stretches.

On the Danube fishing is allowed according to National regulations. On tributaries, however; and in certain closed or temporarily opened backwaters, other regulations may be in force, please check before fishing to avoid potential problems.

Fishing rights on the Danube are controlled mmainly by fishermen's associations and to some lesser extent angling associations. We have dealt with the latter above, what follows now is information on the stretches that are run by Fishermens associations.

Regional permissions are issued by the controllers of each stretch. Tickets can be obtained in tackle shops to be found near each stretch of the river.
