Balaton Lake

 

Balaton is the largest lake in Central and Eastern Europe. The length of the lake (between Fenekpuszta and Balatonakarattya) is 77 kilometres. It is a generally shallow lake, the average depth of water at times of middle water level is only 3 meters. The deepest part of the lake is at the peak of Tihanyi peninsula, at the "Well", where the depth of the water is 12.5 meters.

Access: The main road M7 starting from Budapest follows the southern shore of lake Balaton. Whilst from the M7, route number 71 branches off at Polgardi and follows the northern shore of the lake. From the Southern Railway Station in Budapest trains leave for both the southern and the northern shore.

Stock of fish: Wels catfish, pikeperch, Volga pikeperch, aspe, pike, eel, carp, bream and all sorts of whitefish.

You can fish from any of the piers of Balaton. Near the pavement along the shore and in the water around the piers.  Around these piers is where Volga pikeperch, eel and aspe can be caught.

Single-day tickets, permissions for a week or a year are available in offices of tourism and in the many tackle shops around lake Balaton.
